Hello all! I'm new here and new with raising chickens too! We are excited about this. I started to build a chicken coop out of pallet forest and nosotros want to install a metallic roof. I have 1/two plywood on already. Tin I just put the metal roof on top of the plywood? Cheers in avant-garde!!

Cheers

Aye you can but information technology is recommended to use tar newspaper under the metal roof. It volition ensure a long life for the plywood base of operations. Be sure to apply the screws that have a built in washer to go on the water out. They are sold in the roofing areas of most stores like Dwelling Depot and Lowes.
I did it hither on this coop recently myself. The principal coop does not have plywood under it and I wish it did.

You lot could probably get abroad with it, but I wouldn't.

I would screw down 1x4'due south to the roof trusses and and then spiral the metal roof to the 1x4'south. Plywood alone would not have plenty holding power for me and our winds upwards here.

Here'due south a flick every bit an instance:

Here's another one:

Skillful luck!

Expert point about the winds.

I should take mentioned that the screws that are special for metal roofing also come in different lengths. I made certain I got the long ones deep into the roof trusses.

Yous certainly can install the roof over battens attached to the decking/rafters only information technology's also acceptable to spiral directly to the decking. That's how mine is installed. You will demand 30 lb. felt on the decking before installing the battens or the roofing panels.

Installation guide from Semco, the manufacturer of the panels at Home Depot...

Semco corrugated metal roofing installation guide

Excerpts from the guide...

"In residential applications, Southeastern Metals' recommends the use of minimum 15/32 plywood or seven/sixteen OSB decking. In addition, we specify a 30# felt be installed in accord with local building lawmaking requirements to control condensation."

"Metal covering can too be separated from the moisture bulwark by optional 1" x 3" battens as furring, spaced a maximum of 16" on center and fastened co-ordinate to our recommended awarding details."

Wow, I tin't believe the support I'1000 getting from you guys!! Cheers very much! About the loftier winds, you're right @21hens-incharge, I exercise have 1/two osb tied down with decking screws. Then if I get long enough metallic screws that goes thru the plywood and into the rafters and so it should exist stiff enough that even a crane can hit it and it won't move. Abode Depot sells this constructed ringlet underlayment that seems very nice merely information technology's super expensive. I'm but going to exercise information technology with 30# felt. Yous guys rock!
